Basset Hound Rescue Network Calgary

Saving the world, one hound at a time.

Sancho

Sweet Sancho was found with his heavily pregnant mate in Iowa and was taken in by Hounds Haven down there who found forever homes for mum and pups, and asked us to take dad to find him his very own family.  He's now heading to Saskatchewan to his new life and can expect to be spoiled rotten by his new pack.  Congrats smooshy boy!

Stitch

Lovely Stitch has found his new family here in Calgary - this boy has come a long way from the sad, neglected, outdoor hound he was when Basset Rescue Edmonton took him in and is now a lively, loving, mischeivous basset hound.  His new family consists of both 2 and 4 leggers to play with and we know he's going to have a very happy life there.

Will

Will has found his forever home in Edmonton and has a new little big brother (a teacup yorkie!) to play with up there.  He's settling in beautifully and is already a much-loved member of his new family - such a nice ending for this sweet boy.

Sammers

Sammers was originally supposed to arrive in Calgary on Nov 7th with 4 other hounds (Henry, Lucy, Goldie, & Molly) but managed to escape mid-transport and went on the run in Helena, Montana.  This was his first taste of freedom having been kept in a cage in a puppy mill for 5 years before being handed over to a shelter after he was no longer useful to them, but it didn't go too well.  Sammers was on the run for 9 days in Helena before being caught by a group of wonderful volunteers who'd been tracking him tirelessly who found that he'd been hit by a train.  Sammers is currently with a team of vets in Helena undergoing the amputation of his tail and part of his front right paw.  He was fostered in Montana before finally arriving in Calgary on December 19th - 5 weeks later than originally planned.  On arrival he was taken in by 2 of our wonderful fosters, Paul & Rebecca; in working with him to get past his fear of people and loud noises Sammers wormed his way into their hearts and they've decided to make him a full member of their pack.  He has a wonderful home and is currently waiting for the all-clear from his vet to be fitted for a prosthetic paw, thanks to the research and done by his new dad Paul.  We're so glad this boy got the happy ending he deserved!

Billy

Sweetheart Billy, the hound who was going to be euthanised for being 'lonely' (thank goodness he had a good vet that called us!) has his very own forever home and little houndie brother Winston to romp with!  We're so glad that this sociable gent has his very own family to love him and make sure he's never lonely again.

Theo

Theo is getting ready to leave his loving foster home in Edmonton and travel to his new forever home in Grand Cache.  He's going to have a wonderful life out there with a fabulous family who are waiting impatiently for the icy Alberta roads to clear up so that they can finally have their new furbaby with them.  Congratulations, Theo!  What a great start to 2010 for you!!!

Molly

Molly, another Iowa alumni, is settled nicely into her forever home with her new sisters (1 2-legger and 1 4-legger).  Originally her foster home, they decided that she was a great fit for their family and made her an official member over Xmas 2009.  What a great gift for this sweet escape-artist!

Jackson

Lovely gent Jackson has found his forever home with Kelly and his family up in Edmonton.  He'll have 2 canine brothers (a lab and a collie-mix) to play with, and will be heading out with his new dad on a daily basis during the winter to go to work ploughing snow!!!  Who'd have thought a pooch from sunny Iowa would end up clearing the white stuff up north!  Enjoy your new life, sweet boy!

Lucy

Sweet little Lucy has found her forever home with Marcel and Jullie in Nanaimo.  After Henry (see below) moved in with his forever family, his new neighbours took such a shine to him that they came to have a look at a few of his friends.  After seeing little Lucy on our website and reading her story, they knew that she had her forever home already waiting for her - and with one of her Iowa buddies right on the other side of the fence we love that Lucy has a brand new family as well as an old friend to come home to!

Genevieve

This little girl didn't have the best start in life - bred for her first 3 years in a puppy mill and then dumped after failing to get pregnant fast enough, she came to her first foster home with zero socialisation and terrified of people.  Vicky and her family worked wonders with her for several months, helping to overcome her shyness before she moved down to Calgary to stay with Kirby & Jesse while she found her very own forever home.  Anne & Haydn fell in love with Gen on meeting her, and after having her stay for a week decided that she had her new family!  We're really happy that this once-terrified pooch can get to grow in confidence with her new people and become the hound she never had the chance to be before.

Buddy (formerly Fudgie)

Buddy/Fudgie was another of our Iowa hounds - he found his forever home with Jim and Bernie (pictured here with their grandson and new furbaby) up in Edmonton.  He's goingto have a wonderful life with his new parents who fell in love with him the moment their 'foster' crossed the threshold and had signed his adoption papers within 3 hours of meeting him!  Congratulations to both humans and hounds... this is a great match and we can't wait for updates on how you're all doing.

Henry

Henry is another hound heading west to BC to be with his new family in Nanaimo.  This sweet smoosh is a total lover and is going to have a wonderful life with his new mum and dad and two 2-legged sisters to give him all the attention and love he could ever hope for.  He's such a sweet boy and we couldn't be happier that he finally has people of his very own to love.

Goldie

Goldie is a very lucky girl - born with a deformed front paw, many hounds with birth defects aren't often given the chance for a long, happy life by breeders, but Goldie fell into good hands and will be moving from the US up to Calgary to be with her new forever family!  Goldie's new 2-legged sibling has a lot in common with her - he was also born with a club foot and when his family saw Goldie on the website they knew it was meant to be.  We're really excited about this match and can't wait to see an update from these guys!

Fat Tony (formerly Smithers)

Fat Tony (Smithers) is safe and sound in Vancouver with his new dad and basset sister Charlotte (who originally hails from our friends Bonjovie Bassets in Edmonton!).  This young boy (we think around a year old give or take a few months) is going to have a fantastic life out there thanks to the efforts of volunteers both in the US and Canada who got him out of a kill shelter in the nick of time and on a transport north to his forever home.

Buddy & Anita

Buddy and Anita are new fur-siblings, both came up from Iowa in November 2009 and found their new forever home with Rob - who drove over the rockies form Vernon, BC to pick them up in Calgary.  Sweet Anita will find all the love she needs to get her past her painful shyness due to previous abuse from both her new dad and her new brother.  Buddy, pulled from a kill shelter at the last minute, is such a friendly lovebug who'll love anyone and anything given half a chance!  2 very different hounds, but 2 very lucky hounds!  We can't wait to see how Anita flourishes under the care of her new family, and know that these 2 pooches are going to give their new dad a lot of joy.

Stella

Sweet Stella came to us with a really sad story - she had been abandoned by her previous family when their house was foreclosed on... left chained in the back garden with no food, water and heavily pregnant.  Sadly, none of Stella's pups survived, but Stella did manage to pull through and was finally found by a neighbour who turned her over to Hounds Haven in Iowa.  Stella's luck changed dramatically since then, when Ruth up here in Calgary heard her story she just knew that Stella's forever home was with her and her Collie/Rottie Angel, so the amazing ladies in Iowa and Montana got her onto a transport and up to her new mum and sibling.  This sweet girl is ready for a new start, and going to a wonderful home in which to get it.

Copper

Copper was an owner relinquish up in Edmonton who found his forever home with Ed, Janelle and their family in Leduc over Thanksgiving.  Given up by his previous family when they had their first baby, he may have lost his first 2-legged sibling, but he gained 3 more with his forever family and will be able to spend his days being petted and spoiled by his new people.  What a great Thanksgiving gift for him!

Rudy

Rudy (in the red collar in the 1st pic, and in the centre in the 2nd) has found his forever family here in Calgary with Ryan, Yvonne and 2 new basset siblings!  As you can see, he's already made friends with his new houndie pals and is settling in nicely.  Rudy was one of the Kentucky 4 along with Harvey, Gerie, and Buddy pulled from a kill shelter by some of our wonderful colleagues in the US and transported up to us in early Sept 2009.  Rudy was abandoned by his previous family when their home was foreclosed on, but has a very happy future ahead of him thanks to the efforts of basset lovers all over the continent in providing foster care, transportation, vetting, and the love he needed to get a 2nd shot at life.  This sweet 1 year old didn't have the best start in life, but his fortunes have changed dramatically and he's got a fantastic life ahead of him now.

Max (formerly Buddy)

When Buddy first came to us from Kentucky along with 3 friends he was severely malnourished, but was the sweetest hound you could ever wish to meet.  His luck has turned around drastically since then and he has found his forever home with Peter, Audrey, and his new sibling Sammy (shown in the middle pic) who've given him a new monicker and are working on getting him to a healthy weight.  Through all this he's been a joy to have around for all of us at Calgary Basset Rescue, and has actually ended up with very good friends of his foster parents Paul and Rebecca (who were debating adding him to thier already huge pack of 5!).  We couldn't be happier that this lovely boy has found his family at last!

Odie

Odie is heading up to Edmonton to his new forever family and basset brother Oscar.  He was a sweet owner relinquish that got evicted from his home due to a single-dog policy with his previous family's condo board.  He's going to have a blast with 3 kids plus a houndie brother!  Yay for Odie!

Maggie

Continuing the current trend, Maggie is also heading north to Edmonton to join her new family - she's going to be spoiled rotten and given all the love she could ever want by long-time basset lover Tom, along with his wife and 2 daughters.  Maggie was an owner relinquish whose previous family didn't have time to spend with her - after being fostered for a short time here in Cowtown she's finally off to her own digs to be get all the attention she could ever want.  Have a pawsome time, Maggie!

Cookies

Sweet Cookies found her forever home in Edmonton with Bob & Stephanie.  She came in as an owner relinquish on Saturday morning and was one of those adoptions that just fell into place perfectly; Bob and Stephanie had been looking for the right hound to add to their family, and Cookies just happened to become available on the day that they were due to make a trip to visit friends in Calgary.  It was love at first sight and Cookies found herself on her way north to her new family.  I think this may have been the easiest adoption we've ever had!

Grandma Lucy

Meet Grandma Lucy (centre).  Lucy was an owner relinquish here in Calgary at the youthful age of 13.  Her foster parents Janet and Brian failed in their foster duty and ended up keeping her for themselves.  Grandma Lucy joins the rather boisterous basset pack of Cleopatra and Sammie (another rescue hound).  Lucy loves to run free in off leash parks, sleep on her favourite chair, and eat treats.  A local celebrity, you might have seen her on Breakfast TV in Sept 09.

Harvey & Gertie

Harvey & Gertie are both settling into their new forever home in Edmonton.  These lucky pooches get to spend their days on a farm with their new family, and will have plenty of options to help other bassets because their new mum, Gwen, is the organiser of the annual World Basset Races, held to raise funds for Canadian Basset Rescue!  Congrats to these 2 pooches on their new family... we can't wait to see you at the races next year!
